Carnegie Mellon University’s Spring Carnival is a long-standing campus tradition that brings together students, alumni, and the broader community through celebration, creativity, and shared public space. Each year, a student organization within the School of Architecture leads the design of the main entrance gateway, transforming it into a thematic landmark that welcomes visitors into the festivities. This year’s gateway and pavilion were dedicated to NOMAS, using architecture as a platform to celebrate cultural identity, collaboration, and representation.

reuse & collaboration.
Designed as a temporary public installation, the Spring Carnival Pavilion transforms a structural scaffold system into an interactive communal walkway. A layered facade of hand-painted burlap panels created by minority student organizations wraps the frame, turning the pavilion into a canvas for collective expression and movement. Together, these elements form a vibrant kaleidoscope of cultures that celebrates diversity while minimizing material waste through adaptable, reusable construction.
